About the event

Join on the Mattabesset River for a relaxed paddle. We will explore a floodplain forest, where a forest has grown up in a flat floodplain that occasionally floods over its riverbanks to deposit rich sediment onto the forest floor. This is a rare and beautiful ecosystem in Connecticut where you can see through the trees onto a flat plain with out shrubs blocking the view (the small diameter of an understory cannot withstand the abrasive force of flood waters).

This is my favorite time of day to visit because the position of the sun reflects gold light off the trunks of the trees into the rippling water, a very pretty sight to see. Muskrats, turtles, kingfishers, and great blue heron are common sights.
