About the event

I love this location during golden hour because the late day light bounces off the trees and into the water which reflects like a mirror. Shrubs cannot withstand this environment; so the trees stand alone.

Floodplain forests grow on flat plains along rivers. During spring snow melt, melting water from up North flows down the Connecticut River - more water than can pass through the mouth of the river at one time. The excess water backs up all the tributaries. And where there is a flat plain, the water will flood over it. As it floods, it clears away the forest floor and deposits rich silt, which nourishes the forest.

For the birders, you have a good chance to see belted kingfishers, swallows, great blue herons, osprey, and sometimes an eagle that nests near the Arrigoni Bridge will visit. Painted turtles are fairly common. Snapping turtles and muskrats can sometimes be seen.

Please note that you will need to step into the river to get into your kayak. Wear shoes that can get wet.
